Pallet racking – recent project

Recently installed pallet racking

Pallet Racking (Daventry) – a recent project for Storage Concepts

Pallet Racking installed at a site in Daventry by Storage Concepts Ltd has increased the storage capacity by utilising the available headroom within the warehouse.

The Pallet Racking was designed to maximise the height by following the contour roof elevation of the building to increase the number of pallets stored.  This has provided the customer with greater flexibility, full utilisation of the warehouse building height which has meant that they have been able to have a smaller, more compact stores and release more areas for assembly and production.

Storage Concepts range of pallet racking was utilised to maximise the opportunity which provides storage for euro pallets 800mm wide front picking face x 1200mm deep weighing 1000 kgs each, storing 3 x 1000 kg pallets on a 2.7m wide beam providing 3000 kgs storage per level.

The Storage Concepts range of pallet racking is fully adjustable and totally flexible and is designed to accommodate any size of pallet, any weight.

What are the Pallet Racking Standards

UK Pallet Racking Standards

Pallet Racking

There are no specific Government standards laid down for the manufacture and / or installation of pallet racking.  Each manufacturer designs and produces their own system based on their manufacturing capabilit, design standards and patents.

All UK manufacturers however are signed up to the SEMA (Storage Equipment Manufacturers Association) Code of Practice which dictates design criteria and also specifically assists and guides contractors in relation to best practice for onsite installation.

All pallet racking installations must be fit for purpose and as such are designed to support specific loads over a given area.  The racking designer will choose the product depending on the design loads and other criteria available from the client. This, together with information provided by the manufacturers technical support team, will allow the installation to be value engineered and designed fit for purpose with suitable specification of frames, beams and loads considering pallet dimensions and handling criteria.

Once the installation has been completed safety load signs would be affixed to the installation by the racking contractor for operational guidance.

It is then the operators responsibility to ensure that all personnel working within the new rack system are suitably trained and that regular rack inspections are undertaken to ensure that the installed equipment is maintained to the highest safety standards.

Storage Concepts recommends weekly on-site inspections by the client with a six monthly rack inspection by a suitably qualified outside agency.

What are the weight limits for Pallet Racking?

What are the weight limits for Pallet Racking?

Narrow Aisle Pallet Racking

Regarding pallet racking weight limits, there are many and varied limits available.  The maximum load allowed per pair of beams is normally 4 tonnes, but standard load is 2 tonnes where 2 No. 1 tonne pallets are sited next to each other.

Most pallet racking systems have a standard duty frame, a medium duty frame and a heavy duty frame with standard duty frames normally carrying 9 tonnes, medium duty 15 tonnes and heavy duty 20 tonnes, dependent on the heights and depths of the frames.

The general specification for pallet racking is the width of the bays, the standard bays being 2.7m wide, therefore 2 No. 1200mm pallets can sit on the beams giving a 100mm gap between each pallet and the end frames.  Depths of frames can vary but the most standard is 900mm where a 1m deep pallet will sit on the beams leaving a 50mm overhang either side, which is the ideal safety standard.  Normally 75mm is then left between the top of the pallet and the underside of the next beam level, which gives clearance for the pallets being lifted from the beams.

The frames can be any height to suit the warehouse they are being installed in and the frame depths can vary from 900mm to a maximum of 1500mm deep.

On systems where there are varied sizes of pallets, pallets support bars can be used across the beams, front and back, to store the pallet safely.

This can also be achieved with shelf panels but these have to be checked from the point of loadings and that they do offer a load bearing capacity.

Mesh shelf panels can also be fitted onto the beams and for stillage systems there are skid channels which are similar to pallet support bars but are a channel system so the stillages fit onto the skid channels safely.

All pallet racking is bolted to the floor for extra safety and safety racking clips are fitted into the beams and the frames for extra safety when the pallet systems are being loaded/unloaded.

Leg and corner guards can also be fitted for additional safety.

What types of pallet racking are there?

What types of pallet racking are there ?

Pallet Racking from Storage Concepts

There are many types of pallet racking systems including the standard bay type when normally 2 No. 1200mm wide pallets are fitted onto a 2700mm long beam with the 1m depth of the pallet sitting into the bay which is normally 900mm deep with a 50mm overhang each side.  Heights can vary from low level 2m up to 15m high.

There are also narrow aisle pallet racking systems where the aisles are normally set at say 1.5m which maximises the cube of a warehouse and specialist narrow aisle trucks are used.

The aisles can be wire guided so the fork truck will follow the wire guide so as not to damage the racking or guide rails can be used as an alternative method.

The narrow aisle can also be regarded as high bay pallet racking because normally the bays are fitted into high bay warehouses.

Further pallet racking types

Another system to maximise space is drive-in racking which is based on deep lanes so that a standard type pallet can be fitted, therefore saving the requirement for aisles and thereby saving space.  These systems can vary in depth and height and the pallets fit onto stub arms which allows the fork lift truck loading the pallets to drive into the bays to load the pallets.

Pallet racking can also be fitted onto mobile bases which are normally electric, again standard bay sizes and this system again allows the saving of aisle space.

I am writing in connection with the project work carried out by yourselves for the new Business Centre.

I would like to congratulate you and your team for the end result of the project.

It was carried out to the highest of standards and I would recommend Storage Concepts to anyone of my contacts in the future.

I thought I would write to you with a personal note of thanks for the recent projects your company has undertook for our 3 sites in Leicestershire.

What was particularly pleasing was your help and advice in the design and planning which ensured we achieved maximum capacity by using a combination of pallet racking and mezzanine flooring in the designated area of some 50,000 square feet.  I think this area of your business gives your company real value, something we are all trying to achieve in today’s competitive market place.

Implementation went very smoothly and the Operation departments here were all really pleased that the deadlines were achieved.  As you know we only had that one specific time frame to install before our new client came on board and we were all a bit concerned of timings – but your team certainly delivered.  Next time, we’ll try and give you more lead-time.

I don’t normally write to suppliers, but on this occasion I think you deserve a bit of gratitude.  Pass on my thanks to your team.

A recent warehouse refit project

High bay pallet racking with mesh shelves

Storage Concepts based in Melton Mowbray recently completed a major warehouse refit project for a leading agricultural machinery manufacturer based in Nottinghamshire.  The full warehouse refit project consisted of dismantling all of their low level 4m high pallet racking and reinstalling higher 6m pallet racking with extra beam levels to create extra pallet spaces.

The work was completed in four different stages which allowed the customer to continue their day picking and distribution and created an extra 2000 pallet positions.  Each pair of beams was decked with mesh panels to save any spillage from the pallets, they also supplied widespan shelving systems in a variety of different  widths and depths 6m high to create archive storage shelving.

An existing mezzanine floor was extended and then a powered belt conveyor was installed to take tote boxes from the ground level to the mezzanine level  which in the past had been done manually which again saved the customer precious time and created better productivity for them to handle their increased product picking.

There was also an existing run of cantilever racking and the cantilever arms were decked with 18mm chipboard to store long items but this was proving unsatisfactory so Storage Concepts re-decked the levels with 38mm thick particle board and put strengthening braces in between the arms to offer safer and stronger shelving positions.

Please contact us here at Storage Concepts at any time to arrange a visit to your premises at which point we can arrange to have drawn up detailed drawings and specifications to utilise your space better.
